Washington, DC Sanctions have been placed by the US on a shipping company that it believes helped move Iranian goods connected to a Houthi official from Iran to China.
On Wednesday, the US Department of Treasury issued the sanctions against the Marshall Islands-registered company Vishnu Inc., claiming that one of its ships is involved in "illicit shipments."
The package was described as being "in support of Houthi financial facilitator Sa'id al-Jamal, who is sanctioned under US counterterrorism authorities, and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force (IRGC-QF)”.
Treasury official Brian Nelson stated in a statement, "We remain committed to disrupting the IRGC-QF and the Houthis’ attempts to evade US sanctions and fund additional terrorist attacks."
"Key funding streams that endanger civilians and peaceful international trade will continue to be targeted by the United States."
The imposition of sanctions coincides with US efforts to stop Houthi strikes on Red Sea maritime lines. According to the Yemeni group, in an effort to assist put an end to the Gaza War, it has been attacking ships with ties to Israel.
In reaction to the attacks, US President Joe Biden's administration labeled the Houthis as "specially designated global terrorists" in January, opening the door for severe financial sanctions on the organization.

The Treasury claims that a ship owned by Vishnu Inc., Lady Sofia, received a shipment of Iranian goods from a vessel known as Mehle. Mehle is connected to a corporation that is already under sanctions and has ties to al-Jamal.
The shipment's nature was not disclosed by the Treasury, although Iranian petrochemicals and oil are subject to severe US sanctions.
The Treasury claims that the ship is currently en route to China. Apart from Mehle's ties to al-Jamal and the cargo's Iranian provenance, the US statement did not specify who controls it.
The corporation's assets are frozen in the US under the sanctions, and doing business with the company is essentially forbidden for US residents.
